Airport Wi-Fi: KPN’s service in Schiphol (Amsterdam) sucks, delivers 205 Kbps upstream

If you travel a lot and need to get work done, you need fast Wi-Fi service. Unfortunately, even the best of airports, Schiphol, has terrible Wi-Fi service. Today, I tested the connection while waiting for my British Airways flight to London. The KPN (our beloved telecom incumbent in the Netherlands) Wi-Fi airport service delivered 1.4 Mbps (downstream) and a pathetic 205 Kbps (upstream).

What are they thinking? Schiphol is one of the biggest hubs in Europe. It is used by thousands of business travelers who need to upload big files (Powerpoint slides, etc.).

KPN Wifi service at AMS Schipol airport does suck.

I do agree. I was yesterday 10FEB09 at Schipol airport and purchased a Wifi access. The only connection I could get was to the screen allowing to sign in and enter my credit card number. Out of this it was just impossible to connect to anything.
I tried to send KPN an e-mail. The address info@kpn-cc.nl they provide returns an error message.
This service really sucks. They claim to provide access by they only here to get money without providing any service.

I use Boingo when connecting at Schiphol. It works quite well. So as long as you don’t have to go through KPN, you will be fine.

You were lucky!
I have paid twice and didn’t get any connection at all!
