Fans of Wi-Fi rejoice! Google, Yahoo, Microsoft (Bing), Toyota Lexus and many other companies are sponsoring free Wi-Fi in airports, on flights, and even in Times Square in New York City. I’m following the trends on MuniWireless:
Free Wi-Fi in Times Square, thanks to Yahoo
Free ad-supported Wi-Fi comes to airports but will it last?
Free Wi-Fi has become an advertising tool
It looks as if everyone is joining the bandwagon so make sure you check Muniwireless.com regularly for updates. With free Wi-Fi plus your iPod Touch or iPhone and Skype, you can really save on phone calls, especially if you call abroad.
So far, here’s the lowdown on free Wi-Fi:
- 47 airports have free Wi-Fi this holiday season thanks to Google (in Seattle and Burbank airports, the Wi-Fi access is free of charge indefinitely)
- Virgin America free Wi-Fi during the holidays, thanks again to Google
- Microsoft Bing and JiWire are offering free Wi-Fi in a variety of locations
- Toyota Prius has free Wi-Fi hotzones, notably in downtown SF
- Yahoo providing free Wi-Fi in Times Square NYC
I will posting more updates soon. If you know of free Wi-Fi locations, please let us know. Tell us also about the quality of your connection. Even if it’s free, if the connection is slow and crappy, that does not help us.
